Must-Knows About Skin Cancer

November 29, 2021

Your skin is your largest organ and exposed to many elements. Though the sun is Earth’s most important source of energy, its ultraviolet light and infrared radiation are not your skin’s friends. Though sunlight is the main cause of skin cancer, Ol’ Sol isn’t the only cause. Skin cancer can develop in areas that have never seen the light of day, and it’s the most prevalent form of cancer. That’s why everyone must get a yearly examination from a dermatologist.

The personable staff at Dermatology for the Family is dedicated to caring for you and your entire family’s dermatological health. We take the time to create a personalized treatment for each patient and offer a wide range of services. Our goal is to make your visits with us extremely pleasant and to send you home with healthy, beautiful skin.

In addition to rays from the sun, environmental exposures, certain medications and genetics may also spur skin cancer. No one is exempt from this disease, but the danger is most possible for people with fair skin; blue or green eyes; close family members who had it; a profusion of large moles with irregular shapes; or a long history of extreme sun exposure or blistering sunburns. Those who live in high altitudes, reside where the sun is strong throughout the year or who have had radiation treatment are also particularly vulnerable. Up to 50 percent of light-skinned people who live to age 65 will be stricken with at least one kind of skin cancer.

The good news is that skin cancer that’s spotted and treated in its early stages can be cured. Nonmelanoma skin cancers, which include basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, are not out of the ordinary and are nearly always cured when identified and taken care of early. Malignant melanoma, however, particularly in its late stages, is life-threatening and hard to treat. If you ever spot a new growth, a sore that won’t go away or changes in a preexisting mole, see a dermatologist immediately.
