Hair-Loss Treatments Can Ameliorate Bald Patches

April 25, 2023

For most of us, our hair is our crowning glory. The way we style it helps express who we are, making a fashion statement that’s personal and unique. But for some people, particularly women, thinning hair can lead to distress and possible harm to their self-image. These days, though, advances in dermatology have opened the door to many hair-loss treatment options.

At the office of Dermatology for the Family, we will carefully evaluate your condition and recommend treatments to slow the progression of your hair loss—and possibly even reverse it. No matter what your dermatological issue is, we provide a warm and welcoming experience for each patient. We pride ourselves in using the most modern equipment and methods available to improve the health of each of our patient’s skin. You can feel confident that you’re receiving the finest and most advanced treatment.

Each person typically loses about 100 hairs a day. This usually doesn’t cause noticeable thinning of scalp hair because new hair is growing in at the same time. Hair loss occurs when this cycle of hair growth and shedding is disrupted, or when the hair follicle is destroyed and replaced with scar tissue.

Hair loss is usually caused by one or a combination of these factors:

  • A family history of male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness
  • Hormonal changes and medical conditions such as pregnancy, menopause and thyroid problems
  • Medications and supplements
  • Radiation therapy
  • A trauma or stressful event
  • Certain hairstyles and hair productsthat bring on a type of hairlessness called traction alopecia

Before making a diagnosis, we will perform a physical exam, and ask about your medical and family histories. We’ll then perform some tests to determine the cause of your hair loss. If baldness is caused by hereditary factors, we can prescribe certain medications to treat the condition, and in some cases, hair-transplant surgery may be recommended.

At the office of Dermatology for the Family, we understand how hair loss can have an impact on your self-esteem. We will work to counter the condition to restore your hair and your confidence.
