Skin Issues Don’t End With Teenage Acne

July 30, 2024

As your body’s largest and most exposed organ, your skin is vulnerable to many unwanted conditions. The older you get, the more susceptible you are. A dermatologist helps her (or his) patients manage or eliminate their skin issues.

At the office of Dermatology for the Family, you experience why we have an outstanding reputation. Our expertise allows us to accurately assess and address various skin-related issues, which ensures the highest level of care for patients.

These are common problems that some adults face.

Skin tags are small, benign growths that hang off by a stalk. They are typically flesh-colored or slightly darker and commonly appear where skin rubs against skin or clothing, such as the neck, armpits, groin and eyelids. A dermatologist can easily remove those you find cosmetically offensive.

Razor bumps are hair follicles that become inflamed due to shaving. They usually appear on the face and neck but can also flare up anywhere that you shave or pluck. Shaving bumps can cause pimples and even scars. Curtail them by shaving while showering or putting a damp, hot towel on the area before shaving. Use shaving cream and draw the blade in the direction your hair grows.

Seborrheic keratoses are benign skin growths with a rough, scaly surface that tend to develop in older adults. They are slightly raised, waxy and wart-like patches that vary in color from light tan to black. They’re often found on the chest, back, shoulders and face. They are not cancerous and don’t turn malignant.

Shingles (herpes zoster) is a viral infection caused by the same virus responsible for chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays dormant in nerve tissues and can reactivate years later as a rash of raised dots that turns into painful blisters and make skin burn, itch, tingle or hypersensitive. Shingles often shows up on the trunk, face and buttocks, but it can appear anywhere. Get medical treatment right away to help prevent complications.
