Find the Right Facewash For Your Acne-Prone Skin

September 30, 2024

Many teenagers develop facial acne due to the hormonal changes during puberty. From whiteheads to blackheads, zits can be a challenge to zap. Choosing the correct cleanser for your type of acne helps your fight against it.

The office of Dermatology for the Family is dedicated to helping patients of all ages enjoy the benefits of attractive skin. We provide comprehensive programs designed to care for them and treat their skin.

The main types of acne are:

Fungal: Yeast builds up in hair follicles, causing them to be itchy and inflamed.

Cystic: pimples and nodules that are deep and filled with pus. They can leave scars.

Hormonal: an overproduction of sebum clogs pores.

Nodular: This severe type produces superficial pimples and subcutaneous sensitive, nodular lumps.

When combating acne, look for key ingredients in your skincare arsenal.

Benzoyl peroxide is commonly found in acne-fighting face washes and comes in different strengths. It battles bacteria and fights pores’ becoming obstructed; its anti-inflammatory properties reduce redness, swelling and pain. (Tip: Use a white washcloth with anything that contains benzoyl peroxide, as it will bleach away washcloths with colors.)

Face washes with salicylic acid are for skin that’s sensitive and dries out easily; they reduce inflammation and dry out blemishes. Most products typically have benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid—not both.

While some ingredients are good for fighting acne, other ingredients should be avoided. Don’t use cleansers with harsh exfoliates. Over-exfoliating brings on dried-out, irritated skin, which can make your acne worse. So can retinol and face washes with anti-aging ingredients. Shun a cleanser with sulfates; they wash away healthy fats or lipids.

And steer clear of face washes that use sulfates, which dry out skin by sweeping away healthy fats or lipids. Choose products and cosmetics that won’t clog your pores.

If over-the-counter products aren’t working for you, a dermatologist can come up with a plan that works for your skin type and form of acne.
